History
The Trousers are made of Nylon and Cotton blended, Wind Resistant Sateen cloth and were introduced in 1965 and issued along side Trousers, Arctic, Shell. (M-1951) as these older stocks were worn out. With the US government adopting the M-1981 Woodland camouflage pattern in 1981, these Trousers were also produced in this camouflage pattern. The Trousers were designed to be worn in cold, wet and dry environments with or without their button-in liner and were complemented by the M-1965 Field Jacket. The Trousers were worn by soldiers stationed in Alaska, America, South Korea during the winter months and in Antarctica year-round. However, they were eventually replaced with a new style of trouser in the early 2000s.
Description
The Trousers are olive green and wind-resistant, with a large cut to accommodate the thermal liner and other layers of clothing from the Cold Weather System. They have a button closure around the waist and a covered zip-up fly, with a short length of cord to allow for easy use with gloves. The external waistband has seven cloth belt loops, and the sides can be tightened with a pull-tab. The internal side has two sets of buttons and cord loops, which allow for one of two styles of trouser suspenders to be worn. There is also a small open top cloth pocket over the right hip that buttons closed at the top, which can hold a Zippo lighter or a liquid-filled compass.
The Trousers have slash-style hip pockets and basic back pockets, both of which close with a snap-dome secured cloth lid. The sides have large bellows cargo pockets with snap-dome closure at the top, with long webbing taps on the inside to support the weight of the pockets when they are fully loaded. The legs have articulated knees and the cuffs have cotton draw-cords, which allow the trouser legs to be bloused over the boots.
