History
As a recruit was issued his uniform, he was also issued a standard combat cap commonly referred to as a “bread cap” (빵모). The cap was worn throughout the training phase and featured a short, stiff brim that could not easily be shaped or curved to improve its appearance. This gave the wearer an awkward and unattractive look that was widely disliked amongst recruits, leading many to be reluctant to wear it outside training environments.
Once a recruit had completed basic training and been assigned to a unit, it was common for him to acquire a private purchased Cap, Combat, Baseball Style in order to present a sharper and more professional appearance.
Description
The cap is a baseball-style field cap fabricated from a trilaminate waterproof fabric printed in a Korean-style woodland camouflage pattern. The crown is constructed from six triangular panels sewn together to form a slightly conical shape. Sewn to the front of the cap is a Korean Reservist patch, indicating that the original owner had completed their active service obligation and was serving in a reserve capacity rather than as an active-duty service member.
The brim measures approximately 8 cm in length and 19 cm in width. It is internally stiffened with a plastic board and secured with three rows of external stitching. Four small metal-lined vent holes are positioned around the outer sides of the cap to aid ventilation.
The interior of the cap is lined with a thin black polyester mesh laminated to the inner surface of the trilaminate fabric, with the internal seams covered by black binding tape. Sewn into the front section is a thicker black polyester mesh reinforcement panel cut in a crescent shape, intended to help maintain a flatter and more structured shape across the forehead.
Around the internal base of the cap is a black felt-type sweatband lined with soft foam, intended to improve comfort, assist with fit, and absorb perspiration during wear.
