History
When Malaysia chose to issue a close copy of the U.S. M-1961 Field Pack, Combat alongside their M-1970 web equipment, by the late 1980s commercial companies began producing variants of the standard components in nylon duck printed with the M-1970 brushstroke camouflage pattern. The Field Pack, Combat was one of the items offered in this commercial line.
Description
The pack itself was fabricated from nylon duck with the brushstroke camouflage print, while the interior was lined with a lighter nylon fabric that was waterproofed on the inside with a polyurethane (PU) coating. This lining extended upward to form the collar of the pack, which could be drawn in tightly around the opening with a cord. The arrangement was similar in concept to the early Australian Field Pack, Combat that first appeared with the M-1988 ICLCE webbing.
The lid of the pack carried a plastic vinyl identification window and a nylon webbing handle sewn to the rear. It was stitched along the back edge of the pack and secured over the opening with two webbing straps and metal ladder-lock buckles. On the right side of the lid, a row of metal grommets was included to accept equipment using the old M-1910 hook system.
The pack’s sides were fitted with nylon loops for mounting additional web pouches. At the back, two large metal D-rings provided attachment points for the rear straps of the web suspenders or for a separate shoulder strap. Connection to the web belt was made through two reinforced belt loops sewn to the rear, strengthened with additional nylon webbing. On the underside, a pair of short webbing straps with metal buckles allowed items such as a rolled poncho to be secured beneath the pack.
