History
The Field Pack, Combat (also known as the Butt Pack) was originally designed to be worn with the M-1956 LBE system adopted by the Australian Defense Force in the 1960s. The pack could also be worn separately with the aid of a shoulder strap and could be attached to the Field Pack, Canvas, Olive Drab.
Description
The Butt Pack was made of olive drab cotton webbing duck and later olive green cotton and polyester blended canvas. The first style had a square box shape with short foul weather covers to keep the contents inside. By 1968, the pack was larger, and the foul weather covers were replaced with a rubber collar that folded inside the pack to help waterproof the contents.
The Butt Pack has a single compartment with a lid secured by webbing straps and metal buckles. The lid has a webbing carrying handle and a transparent I.D. window. The left side of the lid’s lip has metal grommets that enable a webbing pouch with an M-10 wire hanger to be attached to the pack.
The back of the Butt Pack has two small grommets to which web suspenders are attached. Below these are two Slide-Keepers that attach the pack to the web belt. The sides have webbing straps that enable webbing pouches to be attached, and the base has two webbing straps that secure items like a rolled-up poncho or clothing.
Examples
Example One
Example One is fabricated with cotton and polyester blended canvas. The lid closes and adjusts with olive green plastic side-release buckles and the Butt Pack’s webbing straps have been changed to brown cotton and polyester blended webbing straps. The waterproof collar is now fabricated with a Polyurethane (PU) laminated nylon cloth. The metal grommets that the suspenders back straps attach to have been changed to 25mm metal rectangular rings.
