History
When Australia realized that the US M1956 load-carrying equipment was inadequate for their style of soldiering, they set about modifying the system. One issue was the Canadian 51-Pattern holster.
With the introduction of the new web system in the mid-1960s, Australia adapted the 51-pattern holster design, making it slightly smaller and tighter to better fit the Browning Hi-Power pistol. Additionally, they straightened the belt loop and “M-10” style hanger so the holster could be comfortably worn on the wearer’s right side without angling away from the body.
With the adoption of the M-1988 Individual Combat Load Carrying Equipment (ICLCE) in 1988, the M-1956 holster was retired in favor of a holster better suited to carrying the Browning Hi-Power pistol.
Description
The holster is fabricated from olive drab cotton and polyester-blended webbing cloth. The pistol is secured in the holster by a covering lid, an extension of the back face, which fastens at the front with a 19-mm quick-release webbing pull-tab, along with a staple and rectangular D-ring for added security.
The back face features a vertical 50-mm webbing belt loop, reinforced with an M-10 style wire hanger at the top for attachment.
Inside, the holster is lined with a second layer of the cotton/polyester blend, and the trailing edges are reinforced with a fiberboard interlining.
Externally, a webbing pocket holds a spare Browning HP magazine. This pocket is internally lined with bent steel sheet metal, secured by a steel rivet. The pocket lid wraps around the front and sides, fastening securely with a snap dome.
All raw edges of the holster are bound with olive drab cotton and polyester binding tape for a clean, durable finish.
