History
The Cover, Water Bottle for the M-1988 Individual Combat Load Carrying Equipment (ICLCE) was issued in pairs as part of the M-1988 ICLCE system and was designed to carry the Australian issue plastic water bottle and the metal Cup, Water Canteen.
Initially, the Cover was a direct development of the final version of the Cover, Water Bottle issued with the Australian M-1956 equipment system. Produced in Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform (DPCU) material, it retained the front webbing loop for attaching a Pouch, First Aid/Compass. By the mid to late 1990s, the design was revised with the addition of a large front pouch to carry a Cooker, Solid Fuel (Esbit/Hexi Cooker) and fuel tablets, in a similar vein to the Cover, Canteen 1 Litre, with Hexamine Pouch
that had been produced by Web Force during the late 1980s.
Description
The canteen is secured within the Cover by its shoulders using a canvas ear on each side. These ears fold over and fasten to the front of the Cover with brass snap-domes.
On the rear of the Cover is a 50-mm webbing suspension loop with an M-1910 style wire hanger at the top. Below this is a second 50-mm webbing strap incorporating two channels that hold metal slide keepers. Flanking these channels on either side is a 19-mm webbing belt loop.
The base of the Cover has three metal drainage grommets that allow water to drain freely after a river crossing.
The interior of the Cover is lined with a thin layer of dark brown woollen felt, providing insulation while helping to reduce noise and wear on the canteen.
Examples
Example One
Example One is a later second-pattern Cover, Water Bottle. It differs from the earlier version by the removal of the M-1910 style wire hanger above the rear belt loop and the addition of a large front pouch designed to carry a Cooker, Solid Fuel (Esbit/Hexi Cooker) and fuel tablets.
The front pouch features an extended lid that overlaps the front and sides of the opening and is secured by a brass snap-dome on each side. Internally, the pouch is reinforced with a 25-mm nylon webbing strap sewn behind each snap-dome that extends to the base of the pouch, likely helping to protect the pouch fabric from wear caused by the metal body of the Hexi Cooker.
