History
In 1973, Australia reintroduced the Bren Light Machine Gun as the 7-62mm/ L4A4, creating a need for a new magazine pouch.
Introduced in 1974, the pouch used the Pouch, Ammunition, Large as its design base and could hold two 30-round magazines. Instead of belt clips, it used belt loops with press studs, while steel D rings on the back allowed for attaching other items.
These pouches saw limited use due to the short service life of the L4A4.
Description
The Pouch, Ammunition, L4A4 Light Support Weapon (LSW) is fabricated from a durable blend of cotton and polyester woven olive green canvas. The lid is securely sewn to the back and extends beyond the pouch’s mouth, closing at the front with a quick-release webbing pull tab, fastened by a staple and rectangular D-ring.
This pouch features rectangular metal D-rings centered on the top, bottom, and sides for versatile attachment options. The back includes webbing loops with vinyl-coated nylon pull-tabs, which fasten to a web belt using snap-domes located on the outer corners.
The front is reinforced with double-ply webbing canvas, protected by a nylon fabric layer laminated with green polyurethane (PU), while a black mottled camouflage pattern is laminated on the inner surface. The raw edges of the pouch are finished with olive drab binding tape, and the base is equipped with a grommet to facilitate water drainage, ensuring the pouch remains functional even in wet environments.
