History
Adopted in late 1943, the new map case replaced the General Service No. 2, Mk. 1, which was issued to all British and Commonwealth forces but failed to protect maps in humid jungle conditions. The Case, Maps, Special No. 1 was made from waterproof canvas and featured an acetate sleeve for maps, which could be marked with chinagraph pencils without damage.
Additionally, it held a notebook, pencils, a protractor, and other related stationery items. Its design was far more practical than the General Service No. 2, Mk. 1, as it could fit in a trouser cargo pocket, making it much more convenient to carry.
Description
The Map Case features an olive green canvas tab in the middle for closing, with matching triangular sections at each end. These elements are secured with metal domes.
When unfolded, the Map Case reveals a large sleeve with sewn-in canvas channels designed to hold a protractor. Adjacent to this are two short slots for erasers. At the top of this sleeve is an open-top pocket containing four canvas pen sleeves.
The Map Case is constructed with three panels that fold inward onto the center panel to close. Inside, the top and bottom panels have open-ended transparent acetate sleeves sewn in place. The left-hand panel is stitched down at the top, bottom, and outer edge.
