History
The Pack, Medical Equipment was not issued to every soldier and was not technically part of the Pattern-90 Web Equipment. Instead, it was issued to personnel trained in trauma management. This is evident from the fact that the pack’s name was changed to Pouch, Trauma, Medical in later 1990 productions, although the NATO stock number remained the same.
The Pack, Medical Equipment was designed to carry the necessary medical supplies to render aid to a soldier. However, there is no list of specific items meant to be carried in it, suggesting that individuals had some discretion in choosing what they needed. Additionally, the two small front pouches were typically used to hold field dressings.
Description
The Medical Pouch is fabricated from olive green textured nylon, waterproofed with a polyurethane (PU) laminate on the internal side. It features a shaped lid that closes over the top of the two compartments with a plastic side-release buckle and a nylon-webbing strap. The back of the Medical Pouch has a wide, vertical 19-mm nylon webbing belt loop in the middle.
The Medical Pouch contains four compartments: a large, full-length open-top main compartment, an internal, full-length open-top flat compartment sewn against the front wall, and two smaller half-sized compartments with lids that are secured with hook and loop fastening patches. Sewn to the front of each external compartment is a large patch of hook and loop fastening tape that holds each compartment in position against the front of the main compartment.
Both the lids of these smaller pouches have olive green nylon webbing pull-tabs, making it easier to open them.
