History
The New Zealand Army never officially started issuing patrol packs to its soldiers until the early 2000s, only providing them with a large field pack. This situation forced soldiers to purchase their own patrol packs. One popular choice was the Oval Pack produced by Westlorne. Despite its simplicity, it had the added benefit of being able to be packed down small enough to be carried within the Large Alice pack. This allowed soldiers to leave the larger field pack behind when operating in the field.
In addition to the model shown on this page, there was also a second, simpler model available. This alternative version without external pouches.
Description
The pack is fabricated with textured nylon, laminated with a polyurethane (PU) coating on the internal side. It features heavy-duty olive green plastic zips throughout, with nylon tape finger loops on each end.
The pack has unpadded, adjustable nylon shoulder straps with quick-release buckles. These straps are reinforced at the top with nylon webbing that extends across the upper back, which has a webbing carrying handle at the top.
Entry to the main compartment is via a quarter-length plastic zip that lacks a storm cover. The front of the pack includes a large sleeve-like compartment that closes with a plastic zip at the top, just above the front pouch.
Additionally, the pack has an external large front pouch and two smaller side pouches, all of which close with plastic zips.
