History
The Field Pack, Combat, Nylon was introduced into Malaysian service in the late 1960s, based on the Australian Army-issued Field Pack, Combat, Canvas design. This version featured added bedroll straps, an adjustable chest strap with a quick-release, a nylon collar on the main compartment, and an adjustable waistband. It remained in service with the Malaysian military until it was replaced by a more simplified version in the early 1970s.
Description
The field pack is constructed from heavyweight olive drab nylon cloth on its exterior, ensuring durability and resistance to wear. The underside of the lid, however, is lined with a lightweight green nylon cloth, providing a contrast in material to balance durability with flexibility where needed.
The pack’s lid is sewn to the back face, with side openings for easy access to side pouches. It includes a transparent vinyl ID window, two webbing bedroll straps reinforced with cotton canvas, and a strap for securing an entrenching tool. The lid closes with webbing straps and ladder-lock buckles.
The pack’s shoulder straps are equipped with quick-release pull-tabs and feature internal padding made of closed-cell foam for added comfort. They are riveted to the top of the back frame, reinforced with aluminum blocks on both sides for durability. The edges of the back face are strengthened with olive green cotton canvas webbing, while closed-cell foam rubber pads, housed in nylon pockets, are sewn into the top and bottom to provide additional cushioning and support.
At the bottom, the shoulder straps connect to either the top or bottom D-ring on the sides of the pack using spring-loaded clips. The remaining D-ring serves as an attachment point for a webbing waist belt.
An adjustable chest strap is sewn to the right shoulder strap and adjusts via a self-locking ladder buckle. It secures to the left strap’s quick-release pull-tab, requiring disengagement when used.
The bottom compartment is a large pouch secured by three 19-mm webbing straps and ladder-lock buckles, with a strap for the entrenching tool handle on the front.
The pack is divided into top and bottom compartments, separated by a nylon divider. The top section has two side pouches and a main compartment, with the side pouches closing via metal staples, D-rings, and quick-release tabs. The main compartment has foul weather covers that lace over the contents.
The pack incorporates a heavy-duty plastic board as an internal frame, securely attached to the internal side of the pack.
