The Field Pack, Cargo was initially introduced by the Canadian army during the 1960s as a fundamental component of the 64-Pattern Web Equipment, a role later taken over by the Rucksack, Universal, C-1. In alignment with the practices of other nations in the early 1960s, Canada designed this pack primarily for vehicle transport, with limited comfort considerations for soldier carriage.

The Field Pack’s purpose was to accommodate essential gear for field operations, divided into two substantial sections: an upper compartment housing clothing, rations, and mission-critical equipment, and a lower compartment dedicated to sleeping essentials. Its front side hosts two sizable pockets intended for frequently used items.

Description

Constructed from olive drab canvas, both internally and externally laminated with waterproof olive drab material, the pack incorporates a large green nylon mesh panel on the back face. This feature creates an air buffer between the wearer’s back and the Field Pack. The upper compartment seals through three webbing pull-tabs equipped with plastic chapel and D-ring closures, a design replicated on the external pockets. The lower compartment’s closure employs a full-length brass zip with dual brass runners, fortified by a storm covering secured with three pull-tabs.

The shoulder straps consist of padded olive cotton webbing, while the waistband is a straightforward olive green cotton webbing belt, adjustable on one side and fastened at the front using a plastic hook and D-ring. The waistband’s primary function is to prevent lateral movement of the Field Pack. Additionally, the pack features a tumpline, an olive green cotton webbing strap designed for forehead suspension and carrying. This strap, broader in the middle and lined with soft animal hide on the internal side, contributes to enhanced comfort during transport.
