History
In 1970, Malaysia adopted a brushstroke camouflage pattern for its military uniforms and equipment. This decision led to the exclusive production of field packs in this distinct design. Naturally, commercial manufacturers followed suit, producing webbing and accessories in the same pattern to meet market demands.
One notable piece in this lineage is the Malaysian canteen cover. A direct copy of the Malaysian Army-issue version, this cover draws inspiration from the British Pattern-1944 water bottle carrier. It forms part of a broader webbing set in brushstroke camouflage, which was likely used by those who could afford it or were authorized to purchase and use such equipment. Remarkably, these items remain in production today, a testament to their enduring utility.
Description
The canteen cover is constructed from heavy-duty nylon webbing, showcasing the iconic brushstroke camouflage pattern. Its design accommodates a Malaysian adaptation of the British 1944-pattern aluminum water bottle, paired with a matching aluminum canteen cup. The cover is secured using durable Lift-the-Dot (LTD) fasteners, ensuring the water bottle stays firmly in place during use.
Inside the carrier, a practical feature is the inclusion of a small pocket sewn to the back, equipped with a fold-over lid. This compartment is likely intended to hold a Mills filter bank, a device for water purification.
The back of the canteen cover is designed with versatility in mind, incorporating an attachment system similar to the Canteen cover from the Australian M-1956 Web Equipment. Key elements of this system include: A webbing belt loop with vertical channels on either side to accommodate US-style slide keepers. An M-10-style wire hanger above the belt loop, providing additional attachment options.
These features make the canteen cover adaptable for various configurations, enhancing its functionality for field use.
