History
The Trousers, Combat, Cotton Drill, DPM (Lined) were first issued in 1980 and are a copy of the British 68-Pattern Trousers, Combat, DPM. Initially, the trousers issued were British 68-Pattern trousers. Later versions were fabricated in New Zealand using stocks of DPM fabric purchased from the British Military. This gave the New Zealand military time to source companies in New Zealand that could produce the fabric and fabricate the clothing.
The Trousers were a welcome relief from the jungle green cotton drill trousers they replaced. However, soldiers found that they became too hot to wear in the dry heat of New Zealand summers. This problem was unofficially fixed on an individual level by removing the internal lining. This practice continued until the issue of the Trousers, Tropical DPM (Unlined) a few years later.
Description
The Trousers were fabricated with cotton modal that had a temperature camouflage pattern printed on it and were lined with an olive green cotton sateen cloth. The Trousers closed at the front with a covered zip-up fly and adjusted at the sides with button-down cloth tabs. The waist had five button-down belt loops that held a Stable belt or web belt, depending on the order of dress. The internal side of the waistband had three sets of buttons and loops that enabled multiple styles of trouser braces to be fitted to the Trousers.
The Trousers had two hip pockets with slash entry, an open-top back pocket, a small open-top elongated field dressing pocket, and two large flat ‘patch’ style cargo pockets that closed with button-down lids.
