History
In 1985, British soldiers were issued the Trousers, Combat, along with a corresponding smock. These trousers were designed to be a major improvement over their predecessor, the 68-Pattern Trousers, Combat, drawing from the experience gained during the Falklands War. The trousers had several improvements, such as better adaptability around the waist, simplified back pockets, and bellowed thigh pockets. The internal lining was reduced to three-quarters length in the legs, and the buttons for the trouser suspenders were removed.
Unfortunately, the standard of fabrication for the Trousers, Combat was much lower than that of the 68-Pattern Trousers, Combat. This caused the trousers to fall apart at an accelerated rate in the field, which was a significant issue. The most notable problem was that the trousers were sewn together with a single stitch, and the thigh pockets could easily be ripped off due to the new design. This design required the bellowed sides and bottom of the thigh pockets to extend past the stitch line by an inch and a half, giving them a “flappy” look that would catch easily and rip. These pockets were generally disliked by the soldiers who were issued them.
In 1990, the Trousers, Combat were eventually replaced by the 90-Pattern Trousers, Combat, which addressed many of the quality issues associated with it’s predecessor.
Description
The Trousers are fabricated with a medium weight cotton and polyester blended cloth with a printed temperature DPM camouflage pattern on the external side and trousers close at the front with a button and a concealed zip-up front fly. The external side of the waistband has a cloth pull-tab on each side that adjusts with chrome self-locking buckles.
Running around the waist are six button-down belt loops that enable a web belt or stable belt to be worn with the trousers. The trousers are lined internally with olive green sateen cloth that extends from the top of the waistband down to the bottom of the knee on each leg.
The trousers have six pockets: two hip pockets with slash entry that have their bodies stored internally; two patch-style back pockets with button-down pointed lids; and two large bellows thigh pockets with button-down pointed lids.
