Shirt, Barrack, MTP

History

With the adoption of the Personal Clothing System – Combat Uniform (PCS-CU) in 2010, the Jacket, Lightweight proved suitable for use in the field but lacked the required military appearance for wear in and around barracks. It was therefore decided to retain the earlier style of Jacket, Combat, Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP), providing a smarter and more professional appearance while remaining suitable for field use where body armour was not required.

Introduced as the Shirt, Barrack, alterations were made to improve its appearance. The collar button was removed as it was no longer required, while the upper front button was lowered to produce a flatter, squarer appearance when the shirt was ironed. The cuff adjustment buttons were also provided with covers.

In some cases, the Shirt, Barrack was preferred to the Jacket, Lightweight for field use and was modified locally to better suit the wearer. Modifications included the addition of upper-arm pockets, an external compass pocket and an extension to the rear tail.

Description

The shirt is fabricated from cotton and polyester blended ripstop cloth printed in Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP).

The shirt has a fold-down, double-ply collar and is closed at the front with five or six small buttons, depending on the height size of the garment. Sewn vertically to the left front of the chest is a cloth rank slide strap, secured at the top by a button.

The shirt has a large angled, bellows pocket on each side of the chest, closed by a button-down flap with a positive seal, where the flap overlaps and closes the mouth of the pocket. Three becket loops are sewn to the underside of each pocket flap, allowing items to be secured to the shirt with lanyards. Internally, each pocket incorporates three vertical pen sleeves. The front of each pocket is reinforced with a V-shaped section of cloth that extends from the pocket opening down towards the closure button.

A small Union Flag is sewn centrally to the upper left sleeve. The sleeves terminate in adjustable cuffs with two button positions. A pointed extension of the cuff overlaps the closure and covers the button when the cuff is adjusted.

The shirt uses commonly termed “Canadian” buttons, which are secured to the garment by short lengths of braided nylon cord rather than being sewn directly to the fabric.

Internally, near the bottom of the right front facing, a spare button and length of braided nylon cord are provided for replacing a lost or damaged button.
