History
The Jacket, Combat, Tropical Jungle DPM (Shirt) was a lightweight garment issued with matching trousers to form the 94-Pattern lightweight uniform used by the United Kingdom. This uniform was in service for a few years before the introduction of the 95-Pattern Combat System (95CS).
The Shirt follows the same design as the Jacket, Combat, Tropical and was suitable for both tropical and temperate climates. It could be worn either tucked in or left outside the trousers, providing versatility for different conditions and preferences.
It is notably lighter than the shirt it replaced, featuring a new fabric style consisting of a nylon mesh with cotton woven on top. This process produced a lighter cloth that looked good when new but had limited durability.
Over time, the cotton would wear off the nylon mesh at high wear points, leaving open patches that resembled tea bag cloth.
Description
The Shirt is designed with a fold-down collar and a ¾ length nylon zip front, complemented by a full-length button-over storm cover. The sleeves hang naturally, featuring adjustable cuffs around the wrists with button-down cloth tabs offering two points of adjustment.
Additionally, the upper arm of the left sleeve includes a two-compartment pocket with a button-down lid, ideal for holding pens. The chest is equipped with two large angled bellows pockets, each with button-down lids, providing ample storage space.
Examples
Example One (Modified)
The Shirt has undergone slight modifications, including the addition of a small, flat, open-top pocket set at an angle in the middle of the chest next to the left-hand chest pocket. This pocket was designed to hold a Silva compass, providing a dedicated space commonly found on the shirts of Special Forces personnel.
This pocket design was later incorporated into both the PCS shirt and smock. The fabric used for the pocket appears to have come from a pair of 85-Pattern trousers or a smock.
