History
The Jacket, Field Dress was a component of the South African Field Dress Uniform worn by soldiers between the early 1970s and the late 1980s. It is an unlined field jacket in Nutria brown that provides windproof layer, but not waterproof layer.
The number of pockets, volume capacity, weight, and size differ based on the particular model of the jacket. The earlier designs were more intricate with smaller pockets, while the later versions had a simpler design and featured redesigned pockets to boost the jacket’s carrying capacity.
Description
This jacket is lined with Jacket cloth and features a turn-down, open collar, along with a button-down front that has concealed buttons. The sleeves are reinforced with Jacket cloth at the elbows and have ‘tube’ style cuffs, which can be adjusted around the wrists using long, button-down cloth tabs with two points of adjustment.
The Jacket is equipped with two nylon draw-cords: one at the waist that can be used internally or externally by pulling the draw-cord ends through buttonhole-style holes at the front of the Jacket; and a second draw-cord that runs around the bottom hem. The Jacket also has two top ‘patch’ style pockets with a flat open top, each featuring an internal pocket set against the back wall. The bottom pockets are quite large and are positioned between the external face and the internal lining of the Jacket.
All four pockets have concealed buttons for closure, while the internal pockets have a top button to keep items secure.
