History
Not much is known about this cap; however, it can be ascertained that it was fabricated from thick woollen cloth similar to that used in the production of the New Zealand Army’s DPM woollen jacket during the early 1990s. Heavy wool fabrics of this type were already well established within New Zealand’s tramping, farming, and outdoor working communities by the early 1980s, most notably through brands such as Swandri.
After the New Zealand Army ceased issuing the DPM woollen jacket in the late 1990s, comparable surplus and commercially produced wool fabrics became more widely available and were commonly used for jackets, vests, and various forms of headwear.
Description
The cap is fabricated from woollen fabric and features an 11 cm fold-down neck and ear cover that tapers upward toward the ears at the front. It is constructed from four fabric panels: two forming the central crown and one side panel on each side. The internal sweatband is cotton, backed with a felt-type lining for comfort and insulation. The peak is plastic-stiffened and interlined between two layers of woollen cloth, measuring approximately 7.5 cm in length and 18 cm in width.
