History
With South Korea holding numerous Korean War remembrance events throughout the year, this Marine-style cap originates from the 15th Dosolsan Festival (도솔산 전투 기념행사), held in 2012, with the first event taking place in 1998.
The cap was worn by both veterans and serving personnel of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC) attending the commemorative function. In this example, the wearer was most likely an officer, as indicated by the “scrambled eggs” embroidery sewn along the edge of the cap’s brim.
Caps of this type were commercially produced specifically for commemorative events rather than issued as standard military equipment.
However, the ROKMC does issue a plain version of this cap style to Marine Corps instructors for easy identification by recruits during training.
The Dosolsan Festival commemorates the Battle of Dosolsan, fought in 1951 during the Korean War. The battle is regarded as one of the most significant actions involving the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, reinforcing their reputation for aggressive infantry tactics and resilience in mountainous terrain. The event serves both as a formal memorial and as a gathering point for veterans, combining remembrance ceremonies with displays of Marine Corps tradition and identity.d
Description
The cap is fabricated with a thick cotton weave base, over which a red poly-cotton fabric has been laminated. This construction allows the cap to retain its distinctive eight-peak crown shape more effectively. The crown itself is formed from multiple sewn panels, giving it the characteristic segmented structure associated with this style of cap.
The front peak is stiffened with an internal plastic board and finished in matching red poly-cotton fabric. A reinforced band runs around the base of the crown, providing additional structural support and helping the cap maintain its form during wear.
Internally, the cap is fitted with a thin felt sweatband positioned around the base of the crown to absorb moisture and improve comfort during extended use.
The front of the cap features an embroidered Republic of Korea Marine Corps globe and anchor insignia. The left side is embroidered in yellow with 제15회 도솔산 축제 (“15th Dosolsan Festival”). The brim is decorated on both sides with “scrambled eggs” embroidery, indicating the wearer was an officer, typically of Major rank or higher.
