History
At first this cover was believed to be an early Singaporean canteen cover dating from the early to late 1970s. However, further research suggests it is more likely of Malaysian origin, either issued by the Malaysian Army in the late 1960s or produced commercially in Malaysia during the 1970s.
The canteen cover is a clone of the British Pattern 44 Carrier, Water Bottle and lacks the internal webbing loop used to hold the bottle of water sterilization tablets.
Description
The cover is made from khaki-tan woven cotton webbing and closes with Lift-the-Dot (LTD) fasteners on each side, securing the water bottle firmly in place. The cover is intentionally oversized to accommodate not only the aluminum canteen and cup but also the Mills-type water filter bank stored on the internal side of the cover.
Attachment to the web belt at the rear is provided by a US M-1910-style wire hanger or a 1-inch-wide cotton canvas belt loop.
Inside the cover, the flaps that secure the canteen in the cover are reinforced with a second layer of woven cotton webbing. The front face also features an overlapping spine of woven cotton webbing that protects the cover from the raw edge of the canteen cup. At the rear is a small internal compartment fitted with an olive-green nylon open-bottom flat pouch, closed by a simple khaki woven cotton webbing fold-over flap designed to hold a Mills-type water filter bank.
