History
The Shelter was first issued during the mid-1960s as part of the Australian Jungle Sleeping Equipment and saw service in the Vietnam War by Australian soldiers. This early style was produced in olive drab and was issued with nylon ‘fiberglass’ type pole sections and basic pegs. The Shelter was carried in the Field Pack, Combat (Butt Pack) or in the bottom compartment of the Field Pack, Combat, Olive Drab, along with the other components of the Jungle Sleeping Equipment.
The DPCU camouflage pattern Shelter, Individual, was first produced around 1991, some years after the official adoption of this camouflage pattern. The design of this Shelter is the same as the olive drab version previously issued. The Shelter is a simple, lightweight nylon ‘Fly’ type tarp carried by soldiers in the field. When used, it is strung up to trees in a low A-frame. Additionally, multiple shelters can be clipped together to create a much larger shelter, similar to military ponchos.
Description
The Shelter is fabricated with lightweight nylon cloth, printed with a DPCU camouflage pattern on the external side and laminated with polyurethane (PU) on the internal side. The Shelter has several nylon loops running along the ends, sides, and top, allowing it to be strung up between trees or pitched with poles. Additionally, there are large O-rings on each corner. The sides feature a series of metal domes that allow multiple Shelters to be attached together to form a much larger shelter.
The underside of the Shelter’s corners is reinforced with PVC fabric, strengthening both the nylon loop and O-ring points.
