History
The Pouch, Improved First Aid Kit (IFAK), was introduced to replace the Individual, Jungle First-Aid Kit and case. The Pouch was, in fact, a repurposed 100-round ammunition pouch for the M-249 SAW. (100-round Utility Pouch) and could be attached to the Fighting Load-Carrier vest or Field Pack.
It was designed to carry the medical kit in a removable nylon insert, with each item held in place by elastic loops inside the insert. This insert provides enough medical gear to stop bleeding, pack wounds, and clear airways.
Description
The Pouch is fabricated with nylon duck cloth printed with a camouflage pattern on the external side. The lid is shaped to seal the Pouch’s mouth when closed and is secured with a non-adjustable plastic side-release buckle.
The back face has a 2 x 2 row of Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) loops and straps. The internal side of the Pouch features sections of clear spacer plastic sewn to each side, protecting the contents from being crushed and making it easier to remove the insert.
The top right-hand corner of the Pouch has a nylon tape loop to which the elastic shock-cord on the Improved First Aid Kit (Insert) is tied.
