History

The Sturmgepack is a square-shaped pack made of densely woven cotton canvas and features a Strichtarn (Rain Pattern) on its exterior. It was first produced in the late 1960s and issued in sets of two: one being the Assault Pack and the other the Transport Pack.

The Transport Pack, on the other hand, held a woolen pullover jersey, helmet netting and Strichtarn camouflage hood with netting, a service jacket and pants in the summer, and a Field Service Suit and woolen blanket in the winter. The blanket was rolled up and stored around the outside of the pack.

Description

The Pack’s lid is an extension of the back face and secures in the front with fabric webbing straps and metal buckles. It has a large canvas carrying handle sewn to the center of the lid’s top on the external side, and a fabric loop that holds a vinyl strap in place. Metal hooks and D-rings enable the Pack to be attached to the web suspenders, connecting two packs together, or attach the East German issue NBC suit’s carrying case to the top of the Pack.

The sides of the Pack have fabric loops that secure a vinyl strap to them. The vinyl straps are used to secure the Zeltbahn or blanket to the Pack. The internal side of the Pack has two foul weather covers sewn to the sides and a fabric foul weather panel sewn to the internal side of the front lip that further covers the contents.

The Pack’s base features an open-top metal hook on each side that connects the web suspenders side straps to the Pack’s base, and two metal D-rings at the front that enable the bottom of the second Pack to be connected to it. The Pack is waterproof, but this depends on what example you have and what condition it is in.
